About Me: Hello! My name is Barb Mann and I am privileged to teach chemistry at KCC. I am excited to be teaching DE as well as F2F and am looking forward to meeting you.

I got my degree in Chemistry from University of Illinois back in the dark ages, and by that I mean before computers. I went through my undergrad years using a slide rule. I remember when the instructor wheeled a calculator on a furniture dolly into the classroom and told us we were going to learn Fortran! We had a computer building at Illinois where you dropped off boxes of punched cards and came back 3 or 4 days later to pick up your data. Needless to say, I thought computers would NEVER catch on. I went on to obtain a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry doing x-ray crystallography.

Fast forward about 25 years (I took a break and raised my family.) and I arrived at KCC not knowing how to turn a computer on! Well, I learned and now I feel that I can show you a few things. Hopefully you will find something new to help you with your work. Computers are here to stay.

The chemistry presented in this class is an introduction meant to help you when chemical information is presented in other classes. Basic things like how to read a formula, what does that picture of a molecule mean, what is an acid or base or ionic compound, how much of a chemical are we talking about, and what products do we expect. We will do homework and take home tests to practice the concepts.

If you have questions, please contact me or the tutors in the LRC (looking for Steve or Randy). Do not wait thinking that type of problem will go away. It won't. I like working problems and answering questions. I will post office hours and Zoom office hours. If these do not work for you, e-mail me and we can set up a time to meet or Zoom.

Step 2: Syllabus

Read the syllabus

The syllabus will provide you with important information such as course details, instructor information, course requirements, course learning outcomes, grading and late work policies, and expectations for discussion board participation. Additionally, you can view important institutional policies and procedures, including information about netiquette and academic integrity. Please read the syllabus carefully, and contact your instructor if you have any questions.

Step 3: Materials

Lecture: Chemistry Atoms First 2nd Edition Openstax. The material is free. Look in your modules and you will find the text and PowerPoints.
Lab: Kit purchased from Carolina Biological. Estimated cost $168.50 plus shipping
